Welcome 

John Martin introduced Dr. Mike Looney and Dr. Lisa Herring

Dr. Mike Looney

Spoke about monitoring data before deciding to get rid of masks. Discussed how to best use federal money in the public schools. FCS will have a literacy science-initiative to get children to read more. Wants to reduce the number of students dropping out of school. Teachers and students are getting vaccines. FCS passed a student bills of rights.

Dr. Lisa Herring

Summer Academic Recovery Academy will be 5 days a week a full day and transportation can be provided. APS uses SPLOST to maintain buildings. Have invested $330 million into the system. SPLOST has been renewed for 5 years and will be up again for a vote in November. Virtual Academy. Hired Takita Baker-Jones as Chief Equity and Social Justice Officer. Weekly COVID testing. District Director asked the superintendents what the PTA can do to help. Answer: Promote SPLOST and the summer academy.

PTA Business

October 2020 minutes were motioned to be adopted by Rhoda Brawner. Seconded and approved. Karen Hallacy, Georgia PTA president thanked everyone for their leadership. CLT will be June 11-12 in Columbus, GA and virtually. Incoming president Dawn Stastny also gave a welcome and stated her goals of addressing mental health.

Treasurer’s Report – Christy Sniecinski

$452.13 is the balance. A store was created in Member Hub so that new and chartering schools can buy products. The District then writes a check to the state PTA on behalf of the new or chartering PTA. The money is kept until the new PTA sets up its own bank account, then the District sends the PTA a check and closes the store in MH.

Director Martin welcomed newly chartered PTAs – Gideons ES, Creekside HS, Innovation Academy HS, Benjamin Banneker HS, and Conley Hills ES.

We are reminded that fiscal year ends June 30 and 990 are due.

Elections

Dione Mickens, chair of the nominating committee, presented the slate of officers. Director Martin called each name that had been nominated. There are no nominations from the floor, so each recommended name is elected. Georgia PTA president Karen Hallacy swore in the new officers.

New Business

Diane Jacobi explained the value of SPLOST, and made a motion to adopt a resolution. The motion was seconded. District 10 adopted the presented resolution to support SPLOST by voice vote.

Jesse Dagan 

Jesse Dagan of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights’ International Human Trafficking Institute gave a very informative presentation of who is used, how to spot traffickers, and what we can do to stop it.
